Glow and Go Guide: The Art of the Broccoli

Let’s talk about my old faithful: broccoli.

I’ve always loved it roasted, steamed, tossed into a quick stir-fry, or just lightly blanched with a drizzle of olive oil and a squeeze of lemon.

It was my go-to side dish for everything: salmon, chicken, rice bowls, you name it.

Buuuut… pregnancy had other plans.

During those 9 long months, broccoli and I had to take a break. The smell alone was enough to send me running (ugh, nausea). And while I mourned the loss of my favorite green buddy, my husband was secretly thrilled. After months of “salmon/chicken and broccoli” dinners on repeat, he finally got a break. Every time I even mentioned it, he’d be like, “Oh no, not the B-word again!”

But now? Baby’s out, nausea’s gone, and broccoli is so back.

Why Broccoli Is a Total Glow Food

There’s a reason I missed it so much. Broccoli is a powerhouse.

Here’s why it deserves the spotlight:

  • Detox Queen: Rich in glucosinolates and sulforaphane—compounds that help the liver detox and support hormone balance

  • Packed with Vitamin C & K: Immune support and bone health in one go.

  • Gut-Healthy Fiber: Aids digestion, keeps things moving, and supports the gut microbiome.

  • Anti-Inflammatory: Helps reduce inflammation in the body, which is key for skin, joints, and general well-being.

  • Supports Eye & Skin Health: Thanks to its lutein, beta-carotene, and antioxidants.

  • Low-Cal, High-Satiety: Makes it perfect for balanced meals that keep you full and energized.

Basically, broccoli is the quiet overachiever of the vegetable world.

How to Store Broccoli

  • Fresh: Keep unwashed in the veggie drawer, ideally in a produce bag or loosely wrapped. Use within 3–5 days for best flavor and crunch.

  • Prepped: Chop and store in an airtight container with a paper towel to absorb moisture this helps it last longer.

  • Freezer-Friendly: Blanch for a few minutes, cool quickly, and freeze in batches for soups or sautés later on.

Cooking Options

There are a million ways to cook broccoli, but here are a few glow-approved favourites:

Glow & Go Cooking Tips:

  • Roasted: Toss florets with olive oil, garlic, and sea salt. Roast at 220°C for about 20–25 minutes until crispy and golden.

  • Steamed: Quick and simple steam until bright green and just tender (about 5–7 minutes). Don’t overdo it!

  • Sautéed: Stir-fry with sesame oil, soy sauce, and chili flakes for a bold, 5-minute side.

  • Blanched: Dip in boiling water for 2 minutes, then straight into an ice bath. Great for meal prep and salads.

  • Air-Fried: Pop into the air fryer at 200°C for about 10 minutes with a touch of oil crispy perfection.
